UK April & May 2010 Top 10s

There are some serious errors in the May chart, note the missing Lost Planet 2 number, the fact that it doesn't match ELSPA Sales Awards, and it doesn't fit with the week on week percentage changes given by Chart-Track and the 2010 H1 numbers given by ERA (even when taking into account extrapolation).

One possibility is that the numbers have all been shifted up to the next game, and that the title with the missing data is actually Red Dead Redemption (360), not Lost Planet 2. I'm not very confident that's the case though, so May numbers should be considered unreliable.

"Xbox 360 S" Sells around 70,000 UK First Week

Microsoft’s new and improved, slimmer XBox 360 console, the XBox 360 250GB (or XBox 360 S) achieves the biggest launch in the UK for a “revised” home console, surpassing the launches of both PS2 Slim and PS3 Slim and recording over two days around the same as the original Xbox 360's launch sales total back in week 48 2005.

This is even more impressive when you take into account that the original Xbox 360 was launched across two versions (Pro and Core).

Chart-Track

Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that UK consumers snapped up an estimated 165,000 PlayStation 3 units in the two days following the console's launch.

That makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii - which shifted 105,000 units during its launch weekend - and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold.

360: ~107,000

MARKET OVERVIEW

Greece’s games industry remains optimistic. In 2009, local sources estimated the games market value at approximately e129m, of which software made up e50m. After growth in previous years, the total market in 2009 was flat due to lower software sales.

Despite the recession’s effect on consumer spending in terms of software, hardware revenues still grew by over 7.5 per cent year-on-year and hardware values account for over 60 per cent of the overall market.

Hardware sales have always been strong in Greece, particularly for the DS and PS3 – the latter of which saw a 70 per cent increase in sales. The PS2 also has a strong presence, found in over 25 per cent of homes.

In terms of software sales, the Wii is the weakest format available in Greece, partly because casual gaming has been slower to catch on than in other markets. This is partly due the fact that children’s games are rarely localised.

TERRITORY ANALYSIS

After several years of good growth, Greece’s economy is in the grip of a severe financial crisis. The economy shrank by around two per cent in 2009 with a drastic decrease in consumer spending. Tourist receipts were also down substantially and the global downturn affected Greek shipping earnings.

Despite and considering the economic crisis, the games market is not performing as badly as might be expected. Instead, it is probably the weak euro, the strong pound and the resultant cheap grey imports from the UK that are having more of an impact on the market.

In 2009, The software market probably decreased at retail by between five and 15 per cent year-on-year – although when taking into account the substantial grey market product, it probably grew by five cent or more.

With disposable income tight, Platinum/Classic releases and lowerpriced software have taken a higher share of the market. The hardware market has performed better on the back of strong PS3 sales and in 2009 grew by approximately five to 10 per cent year-on-year.

In fact, PS3 dominates the more powerful formats and grew even stronger in 2009, with Xbox 360 and Wii having little market impact.

DS is strongest in the portable market; a sector which is growing. The PC market is shrinking but still has presence and is dominated by the large MMOs, which are more resistant to piracy.

The key challenges remain the difficult economic backdrop, piracy, grey imports from the UK, the need to further grow the casual and social gaming sector, and low software attach ratios on portable formats. In spite of these problems, Greece remains a mature games market with good revenue opportunities on PS3 and PC. It also has an improving retail environment.

Spain Hardware Sales 2010

Nintendo Spain's Rafael Martinez reveals hardware unit YTD and LTD marketshares from GfK in this interview. As Nintendo previously gave out these marketshares for the end of 2009, along with LTD units it;s possible to calculate this yeas sales from the change in LTD marketshare combined with the 2010 YTD marketshares.

Console Hardware Units 2010:

YTD / LTD: 560,000 / 4,490,000
Wii: 46.9% (263,000) / 50.4% (2,260,000)
PS3: 35.9% (201,000) / 32.4% (1,450,000)
360: 17.2% (96,000) / 17.2% (770,000)

Portable Hardware Units 2010:

YTD / LTD: 360,000 / 7,460,000
NDS: 71.8% (258,000) / 67.8% (5,060,000)
PSP: 28.3% (102,000) / 32.2% (2,400,000)

Total Hardware Units 2010:

YTD / LTD: 920,000 / 11,950,000
WII: 263,000 / 2,260,000
NDS: 258,000 / 5,060,000
PS3: 201,000 / 1,450,000
PSP: 102,000 / 2,400,000
360: 96,000 / 770,000

As we recently had 2010 unit figures for France I thought it interesting to see how the combined sales across the two countries had been during the first half of 2010:

France + Spain Hardware Units 2010:

ALL: 2,255,000 (100%)
NDS: 728,000 (32.3%)
WII: 588,000 (26.1%)
PS3: 493,000 (21.2%)
360: 251,000 (11.1%)
PSP: 195,000 (8.6%)

France / Spain / Total
ALL: 1,335,000 (59.2%) / 920,000 (40.8%) / 2,255,000
NDS: 470,000 (64.6%) / 258,000 (35.4%) / 728,000
WII: 325,000 (55.3%) / 263,000 (44.7%) / 588,000
PS3: 292,000 (59.2%) / 201,000 (40.8%) / 493,000

European Charts: Week 26, 2010

Welcome to the new European Charts, which will be updated the second Monday or Tuesday following the close of that week's chart. Basically a one week delay to allow for the inclusion of every chart for that week.

Features:

* Individual format charts for: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Sweden

* Platform specific charts for: UK, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Ireland

* All Formats charts for: UK, Denmark, Ireland

* New Entries roundup

Notes:

The Netherlands' charts finish midweek, so as to include the full first seven days of new releases. I've decided to use the chart which ends a few days later than the other countries so that it covers the same new releases (provided that the title had a simultaneous release across Europe).

Finland and Norway charts aren't included as they are based off of shipment numbers supplied by publishers rather than independently tracked sell through figures. Also due to Finland having only fortnightly, and not weekly charts, and Norway only having separate home console, portable console, and PC charts with no combined individual platform or platform specific charts.

German platform specific charts will be completed once I've made a new trial account for the site that publishes the charts.

The size reduction used above causes some formatting errors, the original version is available below.

I think the LTDs are actually through May 2009, as Wii+PS3+360 = 8.3m, which is the same as reported by this week's MCV through May 2009. Adding the 2010 figures to the LTD reported through 2009 results in these LTDs:

NDS: 8.9m
Wii: 4.4m
PSP: 2.7m
PS3: 2.4m
360: 1.9m

It seems that this 2.5m PS3 figure must be shipped.
