Nordic-wide software chart on it's way

From MCV's Nordic Market Report (PDF, page 19).

However – despite the on-going challenges – the Nordic games market is growing up. Its retail sector has matured, with the likes of GAME and GameStop in the territory. Meanwhile, the industry’s trade bodies are working hard with governments and financial bodies, while an official Nordic-wide chart isn’t far away either.

“The Swedish trade body MDTS and the Nordic Game program are doing a great job with the political agenda,” says Nordic Games MD Pelle Lundborg.

“I am positive that there are less tough challenges ahead, and whatever they are, the industry is now grown up enough to deal with them – similar to how ELSPA in the UK have got very organised in dealing with issues.

“To get the financial industry more involved is still tough, but things started moving in the right direction here as well during 2009. A pan-Nordic reporting – similar to Chart-Track – is soon underway and is well needed.

BENELUX MARKET OVERVIEW

According to Screen Digest forecasts, video game sales in Benelux fell ten per cent year-on-year in 2009 – down from €511 million to €461 million.

The firm also says software unit sales had fallen seven per cent yearon- year.

The biggest decline was on handheld consoles, with DS, PSP and GBA game sales down six per cent in 2009. However, unit sales for Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games increased by nine per cent year-on-year.

Wii continues to dominate the sector, accounting for 51 per cent of home console owners in the Benelux region.

NORDIC MARKET OVERVIEW

Chris Stanton-Jones of emerging market specialists Catapult Business Solutions provides us with a detailed run-down of the Nordic video games market…

The Nordic games market is expected to be flat year-on-year. The first two quarters were the hardest and the MDTS (Sweden trade association) reported that in Sweden game sales were down five per cent in unit terms and 10 per cent down in value terms. Trading in Q3, however, was much improved and elevated the overall cumulative years performance.

The Danish games market appears to be achieving greater growth than the other territories. In the first seven months of 2009, Danish software sales rose three per cent year-on-year. By comparison, the Swedish software market for the period went up one per cent while sales fell one per cent in Norway.

In terms of share by region, Sweden is the largest market, with about 40 per cent share, and Finland is the smallest with about 17 per cent.

In terms of hardware, after a slow start to 2009, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 have all shown considerable growth and momentum since their price reductions.

All formats are close both in terms of installed base and week-on-week sales. It will be a fascinating contest to see who might emerge as a leader. These three formats now dominate the software business with over 55 per cent of the market value.

The PC market is still large but no longer dominates the sector, and its value share is now down to 18 to 20 per cent. PlayStation 2 software sales are down dramatically year-on-year but still sizeable and outselling DS and PSP formats combined. DS is the largest selling console although it might be starting to reach its peak.

It is difficult to track the market properly with no official sell-through data in Norway and Finland. This should be a priority for the Nordic games industry to solve.

Last year there was no major change in the retail landscape although Media Markt – a relatively new entrant to the Nordic market – are reported as one of the chains that has increased their market share the most.

There has been no significant change in retail’s buying behaviour or terms with suppliers as a result of the financial crisis.

Catapult Business Solutions estimates for the Nordic market:

Ps3 at 450,000 in the Middle East

Sony Gulf claim 450,000 PS3s sold (almost certainly to retail) as of December 2009, with 350,000 PSN accounts. Presumably the PSN accounts also include PSP owners.

Based on those figures, the firm claims the PS3 is "easily the best-selling next-gen console".

French Market worth €2.7B in 2009

SELL report that the French video game industry was valued at €2.709 billion in 2009, the second highest year ever after 2008. This was enough to keep it as the number one market in Continental Europe, but still behind the UK when the whole of Europe is taken into account. The figures come from GfK and include "France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece ... ... ."

In 2008 GfK had the total value of hardware and software (including PC) at €2.944B in France compared to €2.756B in Germany, which would mean the French market declined by 8% in value during 2009, assuming the 2009 figure doesn't include accessories.

SCE Asia enters Vietnamese market

A while ago SCE Asia said it had abandoned efforts to enter mainland China after several years of attempts due to the lack of cooperation by the Chinese government in legalising video game consoles. Instead it said it would focus on expanding it's presence in South East Asia. This must also be the reason why the 2007 announcement by Nintendo of plans to launch the Wii in mainland China during 2008 never materialised.

Following it's entrance into the Indonesian market in November SCE Asia continues it's South East Asian expansion with the initiation of it's PlayStation business in Vietnam. Having already been present in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, along with Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan this now leaves the Philippines as the only significant market economy in East Asia without official operations by SCE Asia excluding mainland China. It would seem that the Philippines is likely to be the next and final territory in SCE Asia's SE Asian expansion plans.

SCE Italy boast about PS3 percentage increase

SCE Italy claim PS3 sales according to GfK for the last four months of 2009 were up 84% on the same period in 2008. Unfortunately they don't reveal any actual unit sales numbers, instead they say that Uncharted 2 is now the second best selling first party PS3 game in the country behind Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, and that the new Gran Turismo 5 demo and Vidzone have been downloaded a lot.

Wii passes 4M in France, DS passes 8M

Nintendo France, citing GfK figures have announced that Wii lifetime sales exceeded 4,000,000 through week 52 of 2009. They also mentioned that DS is over 8,000,000 in the country, although they didn't specify which week this occured, or how much over 8M it is.

SCE France recently said that PS3 was at 2,000,000 and X360 at 1,600,000 through week 51.

Whilst exact hardware numbers for 2009 have yet to be announced by GfK, it's possible work out rough YTD sales for the above consoles from the 2008 LTDs;

2009 Hardware Unit Sales: (LTD)

NDS: ~1.4M (8M)
Wii: ~1.1M (4M)
PS3: ~0.8M (2M)
360: ~0.5M (1.6M)

As Nintendo didn't say how far over 4M and 8M Wii & DS were, and due to PS3 & 360 numbers being only through week 51 exact figures may end up slightly higher.

UK All Time Top 3 Software Titles

Chart-Track report that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the third highest selling title of all time in the UK. Thanks to the first week sales of 1.78M released by Chart-Track, along with subsequent weekly percentage change reports we know that Modern Warfare 2 was at 2.97M through Jan 09. This number is the estimated total for 100% of the market, actual tracked sales from Chart-Track which covers around 90% of the UK market should be 2.67M.

Dr.Kawashima's Brain Training currently holds the number one spot having passed 3M and GTA: San Andreas in the first half of 2009, again, this number is for 100% of the market. With the title still charting it should have added a few hundred thousand since then.

Current second position holder is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, ELSPA accidentally posted the PS2 version's LTD of 2,355,328 with the week 10 2009 charts, as it was still selling ~1K/week it should be around 2.4M by now. The Xbox version is between 200,000 and 300,000, with the PC version between 100,000 and 200,000 according to their ELSPA Sales Awards. The ELSPA numbers aren't extrapolated for 100% of the market though. GTA: San Andreas launched on PS2 in November 2004 when Chart-Track covered 85% of the market, before they increased to 90% coverage in January 2005, which complicates extrapolating to 100% of the market as sales are split over two different percentage coverages. For simplicities' sake I've used the middle figure of 87.5%. This puts the tracked sales at around 2.8M, or around an estimated 3.2M for 100% of the market.

Below shows that MW2 should soon take second place from GTA: SA, but first place should take a while longer, if at all. Maybe if Chart-Track are feeling generous they'll mention how much the other two have sold when this occurs.

UK Software Unit Sales over the past decade

Wii and X360 are now neck and neck with total software unit sales of nearly 47M each. Whilst Wii is shown as slightly ahead through 2009, the difference is within the margin of rounding errors. PS3 now overtakes PSP with 26.5M to 21.5M, PS3 also passes the original Xbox's total of 24.5M.

UK Market 2009 *Updated*

MCV report much of the missing data, with only individual hardware data remaining. Hopefully GAME will release hardware unit data with it's Christmas Trading Statement on Wednesday.

As previously noted, Chart-Track adjusted hardware unit totals in 2009, and backdated the adjustments, Wii 2008 LTD Total was adjusted down 4% (200K), and NDS LTD Total was adjusted down 5% (400K). Unfortunately we don't have the adjustments for the other consoles, but with Xbox 360 LTD total through mid 2009 being slightly higher than expected, and PS3 + PSP being inline with expectations, my guess is that X360 was adjusted up, with PS3 + PSP remaining largely unchanged. Still, hard figures will be required to confirm this.

Regardless of the adjustment, 2008 total home console units remained largely unchanged, with 5.33M now reported for 2008 from the previously reported 5.35M. Adjusted Wii figures for 2008 are 2.73M, which suggests the previous 2008 Wii figure was adjusted down 100K from 2.84M. More than likely the 100K Wii drop was mostly cancelled out by a similarly sized increase for the X360.

However, 2008 total portable console units have seen a considerable downward adjustment from 3.95M to 3.7M, most of this is probably attributable to the 5% downward adjustment of the DS. This brings Total 2008 hardware units down to 9.0M from the originally reported 9.3M record.

Back to 2009, with 68.4M console software units sold in 2009 it will be interesting to see if the UK can hold onto it's Worldwide second place in terms of console software units which it took from Japan in 2008. Hopefully Famitsu will publish total Japanese console software units sometime this week.

Xbox 360 at 39 Million Worldwide

At CES 2010 Microsoft announced that Global shipments of Xbox 360 are now at 39 Million. With shipments through the quarter ending September 30 at 33.5M, shipments for the final quarter of 2009 should be around 5.5M, although we'll have to wait until Microsoft's earnings results on January 28th to see if the 39M figure is rounded or not.

Nintendo will also announce their earning results on January 28, with Sony's loosely scheduled for the last third of January.

Sony sold 3.8M PS3s Worldwide in December

Press Release:

PlayStation(R)3 Retail Sales Exceed 3.8 Million Units Worldwide During the Holiday Sales Season

Remarkable 76% Increase Compared to the Previous Year, Resulting in the Most Successful Holiday Season in the History of PlayStation(R)3

TOKYO, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that the holiday season retail sales of PlayStation®3 (PS3®) computer entertainment systems during the five weeks following the last week of November 2009(*1) exceeded 3.8 million units worldwide(*2). The PS3 platform experienced a 76% increase in hardware sales compared to the same period in the previous year, marking the highest record sales for PS3 hardware for a holiday period. With the release of the new slimmer and lighter PS3 system combined with an exciting line-up of compelling software titles, as well as with the expansion of new content and services on PlayStation®Network, with more than 38 million registered accounts(*3) worldwide, the PS3 platform continues to surpass its momentum every year and remains on track to further accelerate the growth of its worldwide installed base into 2010.

(*1) From November 23 to December 27 for Japan and Asia, from November 24 to December 28 for North America, and from November 21 to December 25 for Europe and PAL territories.

(*2) Retail sales number is estimated by SCEI.

(*3) Number as of January 3, 2010.

Sony's Kaz Hirai announced at CES 2010 that 1.7M of the 3.8M were sold in NA, yesterday Nintendo said they sold through to consumers over 3M Wii units in the US alone, with NDS breaking the annual US sales record.

December 2009 PS3 hardware units sales:

Worldwide: 3,800,000
North America: 1,700,000
Japan: 535,110 (Famitsu)
PAL & Asia excluding Japan: 1,565,000 (Worldwide - NA & Japan)

NDS passes 40M in Europe, Wii passes 20M

According to Nintendo of Europe's internal sales panel NDS has become the best ever selling video game system in Europe with 40M units sold, they also claim Wii to be "the fastest selling home console in Europe by reaching the 20 million milestone in just over three years". Whilst they didn't give out annual sales, they previously gave out annual and LTD sales for 2008, making it possible to calculate 2009 sales.

2009 European Sales (2008) [LTD]:
NDS: 9M (11.2M) [40M]
Wii: 5.8M (8.3M) [20M]

That puts Wii down 30% and NDS down 20% during 2009.

UK Market 2009

ELSPA have reported overall market data for 2009, Wii was the leading software units seller, moving over 18M units last year, but 360 took the software value crown with £459M in revenue. PS3 saw the largest software and hardware units increase, up 14% (11.9M) and 2% (974K) respectively, PS3 now sits at 2.8M in the UK.

It should be noted that the 974K PS3 figure is based on a 2% increase from the 955K originally reported as sold in 2008, however Chart-Track adjusted some of it's historical hardware data in 2009 which could result in a slightly different 2008 figure than originally reported. I don't think PS3 was affected too much by the adjustment though, so I expect any change to be minor if anything.

Although 2009 was a 53 week year for Chart-Track, these figures are only for the first 52 weeks of the year for comparison to the 52 week 2008.

Expect updates to the missing format software totals in the coming days, with possible hardware data next week.

Here are the 2009 figures with 2008 figures in parentheses:
