Archive: European April 2008 Monthly Software Sales

I found this sample of GfK Media Control's April 2008 International Top Line Report interesting. A top line report is a summary of the key findings of a more comprehensive report. This suggests that GfK Media Control offer a more indepth monthly report on the European & Australian video gaming markets.

This report is from before GfK aquired a majority shareholding in Chart-Track in July 2008. Chart-Track cover sales in the UK, Ireland, and Denmark. Presumably GfK's monthly report now also includes these countries. This leaves Finland and Norway as the only Western European countries not currently covered by Chart-Track. I understand that plans are on the way for GfK to also track sales in these two countries.

Here are the console software market coverage shares of the different countries covered in the report:

Australia: 100%
France: 99%
Portugal: 85%
Netherlands: 70%
Belgium: 70%
Switzerland: 70%
Spain: 69%
Italy: 68%
Austria: 65%
Germany: 55%
Sweden: 52%

Note that most of these national trackers were once separate companies with different methodologies that have since been aquired by GfK. Thus GfK Australia and GfK France, with 100% and 99% coverage respectively probably already extrapolate for the whole market and obviously don't actually track the whole market. It seems that the others just report their tracked sales, and give a market coverage % for the end user to extrapolate themselves.

So here are the extraploated figures;

Console Software Unit Sales (April 2008 / YTD 2008):

France: 2.395m / 9.875m
Germany: 1.873m / 9.745m
Australia: 1.17m / 4.3m
Spain: 0.913m / 5.304m
Italy: 0.925m / 4.265m
Netherlands: 0.471m / 2.043m
Sweden: 0.381m / 1.817m
Belgium: 0.357m / 1.543m
Switzerland: 0.214m / 0.923m
Austria: 0.176m / 0.985m
Portugal: 0.118m / 0.6m

Data is also available for value along with a separate chart for PC software.

Whilst Mario Kart Wii topped charts all over Europe, Portugal was the odd man out, where Mario Kart Wii didn't even make the Top 5. Austrian, Belgian, and Portuguese charts aren't publicly available to my knowledege, so it's good to know that they exist, even if we usually don't get to see them.

EU (GfK) + US (NPD) Hardware Sales

Activision have posted total hardware sales for US and Europe through 2009 citing NPD & GfK as sources.

Calculating European sales by deducting US sales gives:

US (NPD):
Wii: 27.1m
360: 18.6m
PS3: 11.1m

EU (GfK):
Wii: 23.9m
360: 13.4m
PS3: 11.9m

However it's unclear exactly which countries are included in Europe, and whether Canada is included with US or not. Although Eastern Europe, Finland, and Norway can safely be exlcuded as GfK don't track hardware sales in these regions.

NDS passes 40M in Europe, Wii passes 20M

According to Nintendo of Europe's internal sales panel NDS has become the best ever selling video game system in Europe with 40M units sold, they also claim Wii to be "the fastest selling home console in Europe by reaching the 20 million milestone in just over three years". Whilst they didn't give out annual sales, they previously gave out annual and LTD sales for 2008, making it possible to calculate 2009 sales.

2009 European Sales (2008) [LTD]:
NDS: 9M (11.2M) [40M]
Wii: 5.8M (8.3M) [20M]

That puts Wii down 30% and NDS down 20% during 2009.

Xbox 360 passes 10 million in Europe, Middle East, and Africa

Microsoft have announced that Xbox 360 has passed 10,000,000 unit sales in EMEA* region. They announced passing 9,000,000 sold to consumers a little over three months ago, so if like previous EMEA announcements this should be a sell through figure.

*Microsoft's EMEA region includes: UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Hungary, Slovakia, South Africa, and UAE

Japanese, North American, and Western European software and hardware unit sales 2008

PDF

Whilst the chart only says United States when adding up Famitsu Japanese, GfK European, and NPD US hardware unit sales the totals come up a bit short of the totals posted above, however, once Canadian NPD sales are included the totals match almost perfectly once rounding errors are taken into account. Therefore I'm fairly confident that the above chart also includes Canada along with the US.

Comparison of individual region totals to Famitsu White Paper totals:

Deducting European and Japanese figures from Famitsu White Paper totals leaves us with more accurate North American hardware sales:

Doing the same with software sales gives the NPD software units by platform figures, which I haven't seen published before:

Wii at 17m in Europe

According to this interview with Stephan Bole of Nintendo France Wii has sold 17m in Europe, but it's unclear if this is sold to retailers or consumers. Last month Microsoft claimed 9m Xbox 360s sold to consumers in Europe and said this was about 1m more than the PS3.

Unfortunately due to differences in the definition of Europe and unclear sources (GfK, internal estimates, or shipped?) the following figures may not be comparing exactly the same thing, they also fail to include PS3 Slim sales which Sony recently claimed to have sold 1m to consumers Worldwide in the first 3 weeks.

Wii: 17m
360: 9m
PS3: 8m
